5 Poses for Senior Portraits

Most of my seniors come to their shoot and tell me that they have no idea how to pose! I mean honestly, who does? We aren’t professional models over here, we’re just trying to look cute ok? This is a list of my top 5 poses that I use at almost every senior shoot. I make sure that you’re feeling cute, comfortable, and confident in each one! You don’t have to worry about a thing because I gotchu!!

  1. Walking

This is my favorite way to start a session because everyone is nervous when they show up to shoot pictures! Who wants to pose standing still in front of a camera for 10 minutes? Not me! I’ll turn on some music and have you walk around for a bit so you feel free to move and be yourself. Once you get more comfortable I’ll start directing you into some other poses.

2. Spinning/Twirl

I looove this one! It’s fun and silly and usually gets my seniors laughing! I’ll probably direct you to do this while you’re walking to get a little diversity and movement into the shots. Spinning and twirling looks cute with any outfit but it’s my favorite to do with skirts and dresses!

3. Touching Hair

The most frequently asked question I get is “What should I do with my hands?”, and I totally get why! During your shoot I’m sure you’ll notice me taking a second to scan the scene and make sure everything looks good on camera. This is when I direct you on hand placement, any pose adjustments and other little details. A go-to is to have seniors play with their hair! It’s super simple and looks so cute in photos.

4. Sitting

Sitting down can be such a cute pose if we’re in the right location for it. I won’t ever have a senior sit or crouch in a photo unless it’s something they would naturally do in that environment! I’m all about realistic posing so it feels like you and not a weird mannequin when you’re looking back at the photos. To make it a more casual look I might have you cross your legs, swing them to the side, or do a lazy criss cross. It really all depends on outfits and location!

5. Laying on Stomach

This is another pose that I love but is very location dependent! I’m not about to have you lay down on the city street and get your top all dirty. If we’re in a gorgeous field of flowers, that’s another story. I love how these photos turn out!

These aren’t the only poses or directions I use but they’re my go-to’s that I pull out at almost every shoot. Hopefully this makes you feel more comfortable going into your senior session and eases your nerves. As always, if you have any questions, feel free to email me and I’ll get back to you asap!
